Extending Jesus' Table

Annual Conference theme was on extending Jesus’ table, and in typical fashion, Pastor Kay has hit a home run on how to bring that back to the local congregation.  It was held in Grand Rapids, MI the first week of July.  What she has brought to us is a way to share how we as individuals have already carried out this theme in our lives.  Each week she has asked someone to share their story.  This week, Sharon Larrowe, formerly of  Shalom Place, and a woman I grew up respecting, spoke of her adoption of 4 wayward children & the impact that had on her life.  Pam Elzroth also spoke of how she & Amy have taken guardianship of many children over the years and how they are a family.  And she asked my dad to share his experience of taking in Eric.  My dad is not a public speaker (odd for someone who used to be on the radio!) so I was his voice.  These are his words:

I first met Eric when he was at Vernon Manor in Wabash.  My wife, Terry, had taken a part time aid’s position there one summer in the 70s. He was restrained to a hand-rail in the hallway, and what we learned later, was that it was for extended periods of time.  The first time I walked by him, he reached out to me, but I did not respond.  However, on a future visit, he reached out again to me as I walked by.  I am unsure as to why I did, other than it pained me to see him in this condition,  but this time I picked him up & held him close to me.  He clung to me ferociously and did not want to let go.  That small gesture of attention I would later realize created a life-long relationship.

We started taking him home over the weekends, to see how he would integrate into the family, and to see if this was truly the direction we wanted to go.  We really did not realize the ramification s of what it would truly mean for the family to bring him into the fold.  We discussed it with the kids, Dennis, Dan & Michelle to find out how they would feel about having another person living in the house.  It was met somewhat coolly, but no one objected.

We started the process of becoming foster parents, which involves a lot of paperwork & home inspections.  We were successful and now we had this child to care for without really knowing what all care he would need.

Somehow, though I knew he was a very special person that needed help and love from someone.  I guess that somehow he was sent to us as a family to take care of.  And it was not easy.  We learned later, as we didn’t know when we first started this journey, that  Eric is a micro encephalic, which means that his skull didn’t have the soft spots necessary for growth when he was younger, which caused his head to be too small and not grow properly.  He was also diagnosed with CP, cerebral palsy.

In and of itself, either of those two ailments would have been enough, but because he was restrained on a daily basis and did not move around much, this affected his legs’ development as well and he could not walk properly and had to wear leg braces to help encourage those muscles into a more natural position.  He ended up having 2 different surgeries over the course of 2 summers to help repair the damage.

At times, the toll was high as time had to be spent away from work & family to be at doctors’ offices for diagnosis and determining courses of actions, in the hospital for surgeries.  Sometimes family outings had to be reworked so that he could participate.  He was a member of the family and never once did we consider leaving him behind.

The reward came in seeing him take his first steps and learning to ride his bike, all activities we were told he would never be able to do.  And intellectually he made great strides as well, completing high school and continuing on to a work program for special needs adults. Knowing that he was given a second chance at having a life, a normal life, made all the sacrifices worth it.

Because of her work there, and seeing the conditions of the children, knowing that they could be more than what they were, inspired Terry to become a special education teacher.  It was what she saw there that drove her to be so dedicated all of those years.  She always pushed Eric to be the best he could be.  It at times created personality conflicts between the two of them as they could both be stubborn.  But for her, it was out of love as she saw the potential he had.

I feel that sometimes people like Eric come into our lives to make us into better, more caring people.  They make our problems look very small compared to theirs and even though at times it was very hard to accommodate his needs, we were all grateful, and remain so, that we had the opportunity to not only help him, but ourselves too.

From my perspective:

I don’t remember much about being asked what I thought, but I imagine it was bit like “hey kids, how about we go and get a new puppy?” Being a girl, I probably just saw it as a chance to have a living doll. Because my mom went back to school shortly after that, I was 8 when we got Eric, I became almost a second mom to him as I was the one that typically took care of him, the boys were usually busy with boy stuff and working summer jobs.  I don’t remember, but Dad says I’m the one who helped him walk, Dennis taught him to ride a bike.  I think he taught us all how to be more patient.  I think he also taught us a bit more about love & sacrifice.

Now that I am an adult & parent, it is staggering for me to think about what my parents took on.  I don’t think I could have done it.  The time drain alone would be enough to kill someone at times, but the financial one was huge too.  Especially to a family that already ran pretty tight on the belt.

Would any of us go back and change that decision?  Not for anything. He is my brother and I cannot even enumerate the ways that his life has touched mine.  I would not be the person I am today without him.

In a white room with black curtains...

Well, not really but the AC is on the fritz so all the blinds & curtains are shut, fans are spinning… EE looked at the “thumper” outside as he calls it & doesn’t think it is the fan actually, but the top fan is not spinning.  So hope it can just be repair as I don’t want to drop $4G on a new one…  Boys have been back, 016 has been over taking care of them.  Always transition issues, but I think we are all getting better at dealing with them.

He helped me clean out the shed on Saturday, that was totally cool.  Have a small pile of stuff to take to goodwill & small amount to go to the trash.  It is much, much, much cleaner & somewhat more organized, so I’m very pleased.  And grateful for the help, although it did bring to light that we don’t always work together well, but I just see that as a challenge of how can we improve.

The bike is paid off, yea!! I am so excited.  I might be able to build the garage & room next year after all!!  No, Big, I’m not anticipating a change in residency, I don’t care what the magic 8 ball says… speaking of, I have something that I just so need to get off my chest….

The last week of June we rode down Friday to Indy so that we could do Warren’s Ride together (the truck & trailer were still up north hauling trees).  Saturday we got up, went to the ride & found me someone I could ride with.  010 was riding with Bob & 007 was riding with EE.  I met my new friend Darryl with his Yamaha who was happy to give me a ride…

Image002

His had a sissy bar, but looked very similar…. Very nice ride.  He even gave me a compliment that he hardly knew I was back there, he was too used to his wife’s “death grips” on his shoulders.  I told him I could if it would make him feel more at home but he declined.  We stayed and had lunch at the church with Bob, Trena & the boys, which was very weird.  But OK, I guess.  I was a bit disappointed that I couldn’t ride with EE, but I wanted 007 and there was no one there I trusted more with him.  Both the boys loved it so I think it was worth it.  I got a few good shots, a couple that have them in it too.

When we were getting ready to leave, SuzyQ gave me a hug goodbye, then quite pointedly asked me “do you love him? Is he good to you?”  I didn’t know how to answer, he was standing right behind to the left of me… I tried to give her a look that said “yes, with all my heart, but he doesn’t know it” but I guess it didn’t work.  Because she then looks back at him and asks “do you love her?” and he doesn’t say anything.  My heart is sinking.  He says “it more of a commitment issue”.  Ouch.  Well, I guess it’s time for me to figure out how to untangle myself from this.  She storms off saying “you don’t even know, you don’t even know!”  Oh, I know.  I’m just chickenshit.

We ride home & I love it, even though at this point my ass is sore.  His passenger saddle is not the best for long rides.   This is one like his bike…

Image004

I love riding with him, he’ll reach back and put his hand on my leg, I can stick my hand up his sleeve, kiss the back of his neck, whatever…. I love that we both like to touch and feel close… We get back to his house & ride to have supper at the Mill.  We were going to stay at my place that night so I could prep for Worship Leader the next morning, but we got back to his house & I told him I was either headed home or headed for bed there because I was too tired & I knew he was too. So we are getting ready to  go to bed & I decided to leave my travel size mousse & hairspray there (I had forgotten to take any down, so we had ridden over the Meijer to get some.  First time I had ever really ridden much without a helmet.  I liked it, really.  And night riding is so cool! Then we ate at the Duck Pub.  Sitting at the bar he said “have I told you how much I love you lately?” and I never know if he’s being serious or just funny.  “no, you haven’t”  “well, I do.” “well, that’s good, I do too!” and I want it to really be real & serious but I’m too afraid to believe it could be)…. So anyway I tell him I’m leaving that stuff there, because it’s not much of a commitment.  And he responds “I only hesitated because you hesitated” huh, wow, he knew exactly what was on my mind….”I only hesitated because you always hesitate!”.  Then he responds with “is it OK to love you without knowing if it is forever? That is what I’ve been trying to figure out.”…wow I wasn’t expecting this, but maybe this is good, we’ve needed to have this talk because oh my gosh, this has been on my mind too.  “..because I don’t really understand grey, I’m just sort of a black and white kind of guy”.  Yea I know the feeling…but I’m not sure I know how to respond.  I want it to be forever, but does he?  “I guess if you are OK with that, then I guess it’s OK.  I don’t think anyone knows if it is going to be forever or not.  But I do  know how I feel and I know that’s not going to change.”  And we kiss & hug and sort of fall into the bed giggling, and he says “but I’ll have you know I bought you full sized shampoo & conditioner!”  burn!  And we’re both laughing, it feels good to talk about it.  “yea, you did.  You got me there.  I do know how I feel about you, I love you, Chuck. It kills me not being able to say it but feeling it, but I know you’re not ready so I just have been holding back”.  And then there is a big, pregnant pause and my heart is sinking.  Great, I did it all over again! After FL I told myself I wasn’t going to do it again, but the subject was there, we were talking about it & it just seemed right.  I didn’t expect him to say the words back, but the silence is killing me. And then he says “I love you too Michelle”.  “don’t feel like you have to say it just because I said it…” but he never says anything because by then he is too busy kissing me & making me feel wonderful in places that need to feel like that more often.

Did he hesitate because he didn’t know what else to say so he just decided to say it or because maybe, it just really scares him like it does me?  I have known a  long time, I don’t like to admit how much I’ve fallen for him, but I have.  It is scary, crazy stuff.  It is bigger than what I have felt for anyone & for the first time in my life it feels real & legitimate.  Neither one of us has said it again, but I want to every time I have to say goodbye and sometimes just because, but I’m scared to death, it is not his normal way. What if he didn’t really mean it, maybe if what I see when I look in his eyes isn’t really his love for me, like I think it is? What if I’m just being taken for a ride?  I don’t think I would survive it.  But yet I don’t think that could be true because he is the most genuine person I’ve ever met, how could he be duplicitous like that?  I know I’m just afraid of being the fool again.  I need to tell him again, maybe he needs to hear it just as much as I do?

My little guys used my little camera.  What crazy pictures they took!  But I love that they are becoming interested.  I can’t believe how blonde 005’s hair looks!  Almost as much as his brother’s!

I miss the toothless grin!

And 008 hates his picture taken but I was glad to sneak this one in.  It was so hot that day, dippin’ dots were the best!

I can fly higher than anything...

…in my magic box has wings… or at least I wish I owned one… check out the song here.  I love this lady!

http://www.nickjr.com/kids-videos/jack-magic-box.html

Well, it has certainly been a long time since I’ve posted anything.  I’ve been very busy trying to go through all 700+ pictures and ended up with 324 that I think were worthy.  They have all been proofed, edited, copied, cleaned up & burnt to DVDs.  The DVDs got mailed out to the guys yesterday.  I was talking with EE last night on the phone, I should have included a card I thought later.  But they’re guys, they don’t care, right?  You can check them out here

http://www.flickr.com/photos/81154606@N00/

I also made up a couple of thank you gifts for 010 & 007’s teachers.  Now I’m ready to make a mini book for EE on the trip.  I had tried, unsuccessfully twice, to make him a sculpture (clay) of his plane. I was just a complete mess in tears.  And bless his heart, he had figured out what I was up to & still didn’t say anything until I told him because he wanted it to stay a surprise.  He is about the sweetest thing ever.  However, it was wonderful fun, but extremely frustrating to put so many hours (that I don’t always have) and then just have it break & fall apart!  I’m thinking I’ll keep it up when I’m not under so much pressure…  In the meantime, I’ll sketch the cover of it & perhaps that will add a personal touch to it.  I want to keep it simple so he can take it & put it on his desk at work.

A few weeks ago, GM had an open house & he invited us over to see the plant tour.  We got there right after the last one had left, they weren’t letting any more people in.  But knowing someone “on the inside” has it’s perks as he snuck us in the employee entrance, found us some safety goggles & away we were!  010 absolutely loved it & had a million questions.  And since he is the most patient person on the planet, took plenty of time to answer & show.   007 didn’t like it as much but I think it had something to do with the earplugs.  I wasn’t allowed to take pictures L.  But it was truly fascinating and it was really cool to see his office & desk so now I have a picture in my head when he’s talking about stuff.  It is gigantic!  The plant that is.  His office is kinda smallish-normal sized.  We went to B&K afterwards for dogs & suds.

2 weekends ago we went up to his property north of Baldwin, MI so we could go to the blessing of the bikes.  It was cold & rainy & we didn’t do any riding.  But we did have a lot of fun.  It is very peaceful there and since it barely has running water & only electricity from the generator, there are none of the trappings that would distract you from relaxing.  It was a bit of a drive, 5+ hours, but well worth it.  In fact we are going back this weekend and I just can’t wait.  Mostly because it has been since Monday since I’ve seen him & I always get bummed out going so long.  I just always feel so peaceful & relaxed around him, I just desire it more & more every day.  I don’t think I can really even explain the way I feel.  Most times at work I just can’t even think & concentrate.  My head is anywhere but there. But partially because of what I just said.  I think I’m close to a midlife crisis or mental breakdown or something. I’ve made so many mistakes this week at work & just really feel like I’ve lost my edge.  And sadly, I’m just not even sure I care.  I want to retire or be declared incapable of working.  I’m not sure how much I can handle.

I keep getting more & more responsibility as my boss is off-loading more of his day to day stuff to his team leads.  So I’m more of a manager, but still expected to be completely a technical resource too.  Same for the other lead.  I don’t know how he keeps up with it.  Maybe it just doesn’t bother him because he doesn’t have day to day interactions with his 3 team members.  I only have 2 but we’re almost attached at the hip & they are both still pretty new.  I’m stressed out & stretched too thin.  There is not enough time in the day to develop standards, get training, get tickets resolved, deal with customer issues, deal with tech issues & all the other stuff that pops up like phone calls & customers coming in & things breaking & other stuff not getting done right because we don’t have the standards & procedures in place yet.  Makes me want to cry uncle!

On a good note, I should have the bike paid off by next month!  I so can’t wait to start saving up for the garage/bedroom project. I keep pestering my tax dude about the home purchase credit I should have gotten back in 2009 but he keeps stalling.  That drives me a bit crazy.  Could be good seed money for the project.

This summer I really want to go through the studio & CLEAN IT ALL UP!  I’ve got stuff crammed everywhere & it is just frustrating me.  Can’t get to stuff because other stuff falls out, looks cluttered, not getting projects done, etc.  014 is going to have to come over & help maybe.

I’ve also started Mulch project 2011 with 11 scoops (cubic yards) of black beauty.  I’m already 2+ months ahead of where I was last year.  This year I’m not even much pulling weeds, just putting the cardboard down & covering with mulch. Where I’ve done that consistently in the past there was not much “growth” and if I can get it done before everything turns to seed that will make next year even better.  Last year most of it went to seed.  I’m going to finish off the bit by the driveway & add the walkway from the driveway to the house.  I’ve got some more shrubbery to put out there too, so it is starting to get filled in.  Which will help with the weeds too.  And if I have enough I want to get around the front of the shed & start on the garden idea I have.

Last Saturday I took EE over to the sibling units for my nephew & brother’s birthdays.  Which worked out because EE’s is the same day as 016’s.  We had a good lunch & visit in the afternoon & then back home.  I felt horrible for him though.  He was not originally slated to work Saturday night, but found out Friday that he would have to.  I didn’t want him to go but he insisted.  So he was up Fri afternoon essentially until Sunday morning, save a nap on the way back and another short nap when we got back.  I tucked him in.  Didn’t want to leave.  Didn’t want him to go to sleep either.  But I was good.

Today was the last day of school!  010 received 4 awards for: Accelerated reader, Math Bowl, Battle of the Books, and Fiction through the Alphabet.  I was so proud of him!  007 was sad he didn’t get any.  I hope he does next year.  Next year 010 will be at LaFountaine now that they have restructured the schools.  They will not be back in the same building until 010 is in 9th grade & 007 is in 7th.  Seems like a long way off.

Well, that is about it, I need to pay bills & get to bed so that I can be ready for my long drive tomorrow.  EE went up to Battle Creek today so he could work on the barn & pick the Ducati up at the dealer. I will meet him up there tomorrow & then we’ll head up north together with the lawnmower so he can take care of that before it gets too long.  I don’t think we’re taking the other bike as the weather is not supposed to be all that great.

I’ll try not to take so long now that I have all those crazy pictures done.

Most Amazing Weekend Ever - Part 2

I just realized this AM that it’s been like 3 weeks since I first started my story & I need to finish it….

We got up & around fairly quickly on Monday as we knew it would be a race with the weather.  After some breakfast (we were actually ready before Weenie & Lead & we thought this was very funny!!!) we travelled to the airstrip to prep the planes.  It’s been dewy so this involves drying off all the leading edges & pulling off the canopy covers.  The biggest challenge for us was stowing all the luggage.  Originally when he came down, he wasn’t planning on having a passenger so he did not pack as lightly.  Keep in mind I only had my backpack, purse & camera bag, a major feat for me.  So we are literally stuffing into the cargo bay & putting smaller things around me in the back & whatever we can up on the turtle deck & still keep it safe.  We did manage to do it though.

While they briefed for the flight, I said my goodbyes to Ginny, George & gang.  We got some lunches/snacks from Ginny & George handed us a foot tall stack of photos he didn’t want anymore, of older gatherings.  We managed to find a safe spot for those in the box inside.  I looked at them a couple weeks ago, they are amazing pictures, many of them signed by the guys.  Also did a quick trip through the head & got my hair wrangled under a hat.  We’re ready for wheels-up.  Can’t believe it’s over already!

Our original plan was to head north over land & skirt between the weather.  One thing to note is the 319 has a smaller engine (220) vs. Lead & Weenie’s which are either 275 or 325s so being Three can be challenging because getting take-off just right is key to them not getting too far ahead.  We did  allow them a bit too much lead time, but then we had a cylinder drop out & it was running pretty rough. He cycled through the left & right mag’s and it fired back up.  Now we had quite a bit of distance to make up so it was hard on the smash to get there.

We got going and the weather just got worse with every few minutes.   I’m just trying to keep quiet so they can discuss what they want to do.  Lead & WM have collision avoidance but we don’t and I don’t think anyone has IFR to land.  So basically, if you can’t see, you can’t fly.  And we’re there. We were trying to shoot to Gainesville & then land & re-assess but we’re not going to make it.  We circle back & land in Ocala.  We’re hoping this is just an hour or so layover until the weather passes.

We hang out at the airport a bit, watching the weather & talking with other pilots coming in.  Not looking good.  They loan us a car & we go to the mall & get some cards, some ice cream & walk around for a bit.  Lead’s not feeling well & he’s not sure why.  Which is making him more cautious & sensitive to the situation.  WM has a big staff meeting tomorrow & he’s trying to figure out if he’s going to be there or not.  We decide to stop & get coffee at Starbucks & it is pouring down. EE & I get soaking wet, there are no parking spots & I can’t get the van door to close!  We do make it back, my hiney is soaking wet because the guys didn’t shut the door either & we’re just laughing.

At the airport we play some Euchre & I’m so not used to playing single deck but EE doesn’t mind as he’s out of practice too & we just have a good time.  It’s still raining.  And it’s getting later at this point.  We decide to stay over for the night (another night with him, dang! I was actually totally thrilled) but I have to call my boss & let him know I’m not going to be at work tomorrow & the rest of the week’s not looking good for weather.

We get checked into a hotel, have a drink in the bar, and then we find the “anti-hooters” wing place.  Just like hooters, but they wear black.  They put me in charge of navigation.  This is bad & they are quickly realizing this.  We had a good dinner together & then back to the hotel for another beer & talking before bed.  It is so weird being the youngest by 10 years & that 2 of them are almost old enough to be my dad.

We go back to the room after a while & are laying in this huge king-sized bed talking.  And the conversation dies out & I think he’s asleep so I sort of half-mumble “I love you, Chuck” thinking he’s not going to hear.  But he’s not asleep.  And now my heart is up into my throat.  And he says something like “I’ve been thinking the same thing, but it’s just really scary to say”.  And he never does.  And now I’m about to cry.  I should never have opened my big fat mouth.  I know it was too soon & I should have just kept it to myself & I wonder when I’m ever going to learn!

We get up, have some breakfast at the hotel & decide to go hang out in the airport, just in case, but it’s not looking good.  We get there, and I realize I left my jacket in the room, so we go back, just us 2 & get it. Everyone’s busy checking radar & satellite & all the pilot specific weather stuff like where the cloud ceiling is, etc.  They would prefer 500 and at least broken, but overcast is bad.  Right now, most everything around us is 300 & overcast.  So it has to lift.  They decide if we can get 500 broken to the coast, we’ll just go up the coastline, but it’s not looking good.  They think I should scramble for a smoker & go home (commercial).  I pull EE aside & ask him what he thinks, I have no idea.  WM checked, there is a flight out of Gainesville (40 minutes by car) at 2:30.  So we decide right after lunch is decision time.

We go for a walk on the ramp & just enjoy our last day of Florida warmness & we see the sun start peeking out.  Encouraging.  So we grab some lunch & it gets a lot better.   So we decide quickly to load up & head for the coast.  We’re up in like 15.  He tosses me all of his nav charts and starts instructing me on how to read them & find the airports that we might need if we get into trouble.  And the towers to avoid.  It’s stressful, but I eventually get the hang of it.  They decide they want to try north again, but we get into soup & we do a 270 and head east.  Once we get to the coast, we don’t have to worry about towers & can fly 500 all the way to Hilton Head.  Which is what we do.  We stop for fuel & realize it is much more clear.  We get half cup of coffee & a cookie with a  bathroom break & then we are back up.

We have to head west at this point & fly over land, so it’s back to the nav charts.  And he gives me the GPS too, to help.  We fly over Ashland, NC and can see the Biltmore.  Going over the mountains is a bit bumpy & there are warnings on the maps about where it is especially turbulent.  The sun starts peeking out and that is totally cool.  They were originally going to land in London, KY for fuel, but decide to push on to Lexington.

We land, it is freezing at this point! Or at least I am.  And I had my jacket on.  I hustle into the terminal, take a head stop & get another ½ cup of coffee to warm up.  Then he tells me he can turn on the heat!  Yes, please that would be lovely.  Everyone is all business at this point as they are trying to get home before too late/dark.  We take 15 & are back up.  The workers there want a shot of they guys in front of the planes so we make sure they get that.  Taxi-ing out he tells me of the last time he was there in Lexington & the bad controller operator he had to deal with.

After we hit Indiana, Lead & WM break off & head north, we head over to Indy.  The first few minutes of being on our own was a bit spooky, it’s starting to cool off (it’s now 32) and get dusky.  But it’s also intimate in a weird way & we talk and I just look around.  Before I know it we’re hitting Greenwood & then you can see downtown Indy.  And then we are landing at IND.  And that is crazy.  I’ve landed there a million times but this time is very different.  We get to our terminal, and he fuels up ($7.11/gallon the most we’ve paid the whole time) and gets back up.  He’s got another hour or so flight to BTL so he can hanger & get his car.  Then drive back down to Marion.  He’s thinking he’s not going to work tonight.

I get shuttled over to my car, have no trouble finding it & start heading north.  I’m still pretty cold so I’m cranking up the heat & wondering if I’ll be able to get something to eat & drink soon.  I was able to get some Starbucks and a wrap at Chick-fil-a and then headed on home.  Did fine until I hit about Converse & then got really sleepy.  I did make it home OK & found out the cat had stunk up the bathroom so bad.  I was about to cry.  One because I’m tired & don’t want to deal with it, two because I can’t stand that.  She’s out tomorrow.  I get cleaned up what I can & then I fall into my bed.  My dad had very nicely kept them Monday & Tuesday night for me.  But now I’m anxious to see them!

The most amazing weekend ever!

OK, first off, let me just say I don’t normally share “new” stuff right away as I don’t usually like anyone to see my raw work…however, I’m making an exception for this past trip….So please forgive all the technical errors with the pictures and try to just go with the excitement I feel when I look at them…It truly was a once in a lifetime experience & I’m still flying high!

I checked in Thursday night & found out I was going to “have” to fly business class as there were no more seats in coach.  Dang…it was hard…not… brought back a lot of good memories from when I used to be “da man for XLC & Thomson.  Had 2 rum & cokes & a small nap.  They even had XM radio in flight.  Got into Orlando right on time, had a bit of trouble hooking up with EE as I guess there were 3 levels where he could pick me up, we are each on a different one.  But after a quick phone call that was quickly fixed.  It was about a 60 minute or so drive to New Smyrna from there & it was late (10:50ish when the plane landed) and it just felt so good to be able to see him again & talk in person.  We got to the hotel OK & he actually had a suite, which was really nice, made for some more space, plus a kitchenette.  And now I’m very nervous because I know what I want to do with him but not sure it’s the right thing & the test results & everything are just really driving me crazy.  I tell him what I found out.  He doesn’t seem to mind because the next thing I know, well, we’re doing what I want to do.  Holy cow!  But now the rum & coke are getting in the way because we can’t get mission completion.  Oh, well, I guess there will always be next time….  Honestly, the most amazing thing is to just fall asleep next to this man & see him next to me when we wake up.

We found out that the early flight got pushed back so we don’t have to be at the airport until like 9 so that’s cool, I get some sleep & so does he.  More important for him since he’s the one flying.  And I’m so nervous because I want to go up every single time but I don’t want to seem overly-eager.  And there are a lot fewer pilots this year, which is disappointing to the guys.  We are there with 2 of his friends, who will call Weenie Man (huge story behind this about going to Hooters & then ordering hot dogs…) and Lead.  They are completely amazing men too & I’m honored to have met them.  There are 2 new pilots, so EE goes up with Iowa to train & I get to ride with Weenie Man.  Lead doesn’t have a chute yet for his back seat (the chick is there to pack them) so he’s not an option.  And it is the most incredible experience ever.  I so need to take lessons…

EE (back) with Iowa.  Isn’t his plane absolutely beautiful? It’s like a frakkin’ show car!

Backseat controls of Weenie Man’s plane.  He’s done A LOT of updating on it.

Lead is in PA, 2 other veterans are in 638.  This is during formation training out over the ocean, you can see the beach in the background.  Many people have asked me what all we did, and the answer is just basic maneuvering.  Crossovers, echelons, breaks mostly.  We were 5 birds this day, so we were either heavy left, or heavy right depending on Lead’s call.  They do all of these moves without verbal communication, it is all done with hand-signals.  In fact, the wingmen don’t even watch where they are flying, they constantly have their eyes fixed on Lead.  So all their flying is done by touch & not sight.  Kinda crazy.  This shot really doesn’t show just how close they fly, but I could swear there are times when I could have reached over & touched one.  The planes are rated for +6 to -3 G  most of what we did was in the 2-3 range, we didn’t do any loops or aerobatics, which they can do.  One of the FAA “fixes” (fallout from about 4 accidents a few years ago) is a cable that goes from one wing to the other (I’m not sure how far out to the tip it goes) that pre-loads the wing to a -1G.  It causes it to be a lot more rigid, but is supposed to make it more stable.  Basically, the FAA would prefer the birds to be grounded as they are “too old”.  None of us agree, they are fine birds, and are so very easy & fun to fly.

It was very similar to riding a roller coaster, and in fact at times more calm than that.  It is all open above you, you can see for so far, it’s not too hot & the headphones drown out much of the engine noise.  They are just beautiful, graceful machines.  It was amazing to get to do this.  Probably as close as I will ever get to doing it myself.

This is the back of Weenie Man’s head, with Lead in front, we are in a trail pattern.  Check out the noise canceling headphones!  He’s got XM in it so when he’s just flying by himself he can listen to anything.  Totally cool!

The hotel just aft of the wing is ours, the Holiday Inn. You can see the tide coming out…

This is Lead landing at the end.  They went back up for round 2, I gave up my seat to one of the other women who was there, who had lost her husband, he had been a pilot too.  I didn’t really want to, but it was the right thing, and worth it.  All of these shots were taken with my normal 55-70m lens.

When they went back up I took some shots on the ground & played around.  I was still feeling very uncomfortable as I knew NO ONE down there.  And then one of the other pilots & his daughter show up & she’s got crazy camera equipment & I’m now feeling very inadequate…

Image023

This is Lead & Weenie Man smoking.  You can really see all the dirt here… L and I think I have a scratch either on my mirror or debris on my image sensor.  I spent the better part of Sunday morning cleaning everything very thoroughly but that weird distortion on the top will NOT go away.  I’m going to have to send the body out, I think.

Curtis also got most of the work done to the 319, except for the damage to the alternator.  There’s some discussion on how serious it is (small oil leak do to faulty seal) and se we decide to take herup for a test flight & see how she runs.  I went up with him.  It did great so we’re going to take it out tomorrow & do some longer runs to watch oil consumption.

Saturday night we went out to the SoNapa grill & I had way too much wine & Lead & I were having a ton of fun flirting & bantering around.  He’s a crazy old man, love him!  But don’t worry, I wasn’t ignoring EE either…  From there we went back to the bar across the hotel & had another glass of wine & then EE & I went for a walk along the beach & I’m way too drunk for it.  We do go back to the room, I’m sitting on the edge of the tub washing my feet & I start getting sick. Lovely.  Apparently I was really quiet because I found out later he didn’t hear.

Sunday morning I’m so not feeling well.  I get up, take a shower & then toss my cookies some more.  I go out to the couch wrapped up in a towel & curl up.  He’s laughing a bit at me but taking it well.  He decides to go to the airport for briefing & then come back & get me.  Weenie Man comes over to get him & I realize my hinnie is hanging out of the towel.  Great…. I feel better, finish getting ready, eat some cereal, clean the camera & then he’s back.  We’re going to fly up to Flagler for the airshow & I so don’t want to miss it.  I had no troubles Saturday with getting sick in the plane, but I’m a bit nervous as I’m already a bit unsteady.

Playing around with the fisheye/wide angle at the hotel.  It is cool, but I’m not sure I like the fuzzy edges….

We get there, and I find out my callsign is now Cookies.  Great, very funny guys!  I get quite a bit of ribbing, but it’s OK I can take it.  We get in & take off.  It’s about a 20 minute flight…

Image025

This is the backseat of the 319.  I’ve got the wide angle on, so you can see my shoes…. You can also see how the instrumentation is much more simple than in Weenie Man’s…  Saturday at Flagler, they lost a pilot, Wild Bill, so there are no aerobatics, just flyovers, but we’re still gonna go & check things out…

Image026

Getting ready to launch at New Smyrna, EE’s head here… I so loved being able to look into that mirror of his & seeing his eye.  That’s all you get… totally cool.  They use it to check out the planes in the rear of the formation.  That is Weenie Man in front of us.

Image027

There were a few jets there (I think these are T6’s but I’m not sure on that…) and they did some fly overs.  There were also some bi-wings – very awesome.

Image028

Me, in front of the “other woman”. She’s a good girl, did great, no major oil issues.  You can see my pockets are STUFFED with gear.  Doesn’t look great, so don’t look there…  And yes, I got sooo sunburnt! We walked around quite a bit, took a tour through a Chinook, and had lunch in the pilot/exhibitor tent.  It was so good.  Wraps & sandwiches & really soft cookies.  We decided to leave shortly after.

Image029

Iowa is there in the blue, with Orland in the back (it is such a pretty plane!), Weenie Man, Russ, and then us.  Lead was in front of Iowa, I think.

Image030

Here is Weenie Man, he led on the way back…

Image031

I thought this shot of my shadow was totally cool, but would have been better if I could have gotten his shadow in it too, but it wasn’t showing up.  We went up & down the coast again, more training for Iowa & just skill brushing for the guys.

Image032

Coming back in, they decide to turn on the smokers.  It was really cool to see the planes through that.  Now I should mention, the pilot’s vision isn’t actually obscured by the smoke, it is actually between me & him.  He’s got a clear line of site.  This is the “other” Russ.

So Sunday night Ginny & George (the hosts & owner of the airstrip) took the whole group out to supper.  We were next to one of the retired USAF pilots & his wife.  Very lovely couple & found out they were from Anderson, IN so we had all kinds of crazy things to talk about. She was delightful company.  Less wine this night as I so did not want to drive the porcelain bus again.  From there we went to Peanuts & hooked up with some of the other guys.  They decided to induct Iowa into the Hooligans, they were very impressed with his skills, how he took direction, and how fast he learned.  He was a very sweet man.

Later that night we finally made up for the lack of completion Friday night, of which I was very grateful.  Pent-up comes to mind for describing how I was feeling.  Between being around him (all I gotta do is see him & I have an instantaneous reaction!), joking around with Lead, and FLYING (holy cow, major turn on!) I was on the edge all the time!

I gotta run, so the return trip details will come later…
